Drug InformationAlanine is one of the non-essential amino acids used by the body to build protein. It also appears in prostate fluid, and is believed to have a role in maintaining prostate health.
Mechanism:
The body uses alanine to build protein. When taken for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia,(BPH) it has been used in combination with other amino acids glycine and glutamic acid, to reduce swelling of the prostate.

Side EffectsPatients with kidney or liver disease should be monitored when adding high doses of amino acids.
Precautions:
Since most people do not need supplementation with alanine, appropriate dosing should be decided in consultation with a nutritionally oriented physician.
Preganant:
No studies have been performed to ensure safety during pregnancy or lactation.

Dosage InformationSince most diets with sufficient protein will provide alanine, supplementation is usually not necessary. Studies using alanine in BPH called for doses of 780 mg per day for 2 weeks, then 390 mg daily for 2 1/2 months, with equal amounts of glycine and glutamic acid.
