Drug InformationThis medicine is used to treat high blood pressure, either alone or with a diuretic (water pill).
Mechanism:
Amlodipine is called a calcium channel blocker. By blocking the flow of calcium across cell membranes, the contraction of heart muscle and the constriction of blood vessels is decreased, causing a lowering of blood pressure. The benazepril is called an ACE inhibitor, reducing blood pressure by preventing a chemical reaction that creates a potent vasoconstrictor. Use of the fixed combination is generally in those patients already stabilized on the separate medications individually.
More Info:

Precautions:
It may be necessary to reduce the dose in patients with impaired kidney function.
Preganant:
There have not been well-controlled studies of Lotrel in pregnancy. Use only if clearly needed and the benefit outweighs any potential risk. Some ACE inhibitors have been shown to be excreted in breast milk in small quantities, so caution should be used in deciding whether to discontinue the drug or the breast-feeding.
