Drug InformationAntacids are used for the relief of heartburn, reflux, sour stomach, or gastritis. Antacid combinations may be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor. Antacids are available over-the-counter without a prescription.
Mechanism:
Antacids work in the stomach by neutralizing acids which reduces symptoms.

Side EffectsAntacids which contain mainly aluminum or calcium can cause constipation. Magnesium-containing antacids may cause diarrhea.
Precautions:
Some tests may be affected by this medicine. Tell your doctor that you are taking this medicine before you have any tests to determine how much acid your stomach produces.
Preganant:
Talk to your doctor about using this medicine during pregnancy or nursing to discuss any possible risks to you or your baby. There have been reports of antacids causing side effects in babies whose mothers took antacids for a long time. For nursing mothers, some aluminum-, calcium-, or magnesium-containing antacids may pass into breast milk. However, there have been no problems reported in nursing babies.

Dosage InformationFor proper use of this medicine, follow the directions on the package, unless otherwise instructed by your doctor. Shake well before using. Chewable tablets should be chewed thoroughly before swallowing and followed with water.
Missed Dosage:
If your doctor has instructed you to take this medicine regularly and you miss a dose, take your next dose, as soon as you remember. If you are close to your next dose, do not double up. Skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule.
Storage:
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
Overdose:
Seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
