Drug InformationThis medicine is used for dissolving gallstones.This medicine is used in patients with gallstones who do not need to have their gallbladders removed or in those in whom surgery should be avoided because of other medical problems.
Mechanism:
It works by decreasing the production of cholesterol and by dissolving the cholesterol in bile so that it cannot form stones.

Side EffectsThis medicine may cause side effects. Let your doctor know if these side effects are bothersome or won't go away: upset stomach, diarrhea, dizziness, vomiting, back or muscle pain
Precautions:
Tell your doctor if you are allergic to ursodiol or other bile acids.
Preganant:
Before taking this medicine, if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to become pregnant, talk to your health care provider.

Dosage InformationFollow the directions given to you by your doctor. This drug must be taken for months to have an effect. You may need to take ursodiol for up to 2 years. Your gallstones may not completely dissolve, and even if your gallstones do dissolve you may have gallstones again within 5 years after successful treatment with ursodiol. Continue to take ursodiol even if you feel well. Do not stop taking ursodiol without talking to your doctor.
Missed Dosage:
Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.
Storage:
Keep this medication tightly closed in the original container it came in. Store this medicine at room temperature and keep away from excess heat and moisture. Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose:
Seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
