Drug InformationArginine is an amino acid with numerous functions in the body. It is involved in wound healing, stimulates immune function, and promotes secretion of several hormones, including insulin, glucagons, and growth hormone. Arginine is a precursor to nitric oxide, necessary for the body to keep blood vessels dilated. It is also believed to help regulate cholesterol levels and is a natural blood thinner.
Mechanism:
Its effect on release of growth hormone has stimulated interest in bodybuilders, with a decrease in body fat with exercise. Its effect on protein synthesis also improves wound healing. It is also believed to act as a natural blood thinner and to help to regulate cholesterol levels.

Side EffectsThere are no common side effects reported with the proper use of this medicine. There is concern by some researchers that increases in growth hormone might stress the pancreas.
Precautions:
Individuals with kidney or liver disease should use with caution. Those with herpes (cold sores or genital) should not use arginine, since arginine stimulates growth of the virus.
Preganant:
Safety of use during pregnancy or lactation has not been established.
