Drug InformationOrally, bee pollen is taken as an appetite stimulant, to improve stamina, for premature aging, preventing hay fever, and for gastrointestinal problems, including constipation, diarrhea, and colitis. Topically, bee pollen is used for skin care and softening.
Mechanism:
Bee pollen is the pollen from flowers and plants that accumulates on the legs of worker bees. The pollen is known to consist of polysaccharides, lipids, proteins, simple sugars, carotenoids, and vitamin C. There is no reliable evidence of any therapeutic benefit from bee pollen products.

Side EffectsThere may also be gastrointestinal upset, and even hepatitis.
Precautions:
Patients allergic to pollens are cautioned not to use bee pollen products. Patients with existing liver disease should also not use bee pollen.
Preganant:
Not recommended for use during pregnancy, since bee pollen might have uterine stimulant effects. There is insufficient information available regarding use during lactation.
