Drug InformationThis medicine is used to treat high blood pressure, either alone or in conjunction with other medications.
Mechanism:
Beta-blockers reduce blood pressure by blocking the action of a chemical that causes constriction of blood vessels and stimulation of heart muscle. The HCTZ (hydrochlorothiazide) is a diuretic (water pill), to reduce fluid retention. The net result is a relaxation of arteries, lowering of blood pressure, and increase in heart output, with little change in heart rate.
More Info:

Side Effectsheadache
Precautions:
Do NOT abruptly stop taking this medication, as sudden withdrawal may cause chest pains.
Preganant:
There have not been well-controlled studies of Ziac in pregnancy. Use only if clearly needed and the benefit outweighs any potential risk. Some beta blockers have been shown to be excreted in breast milk in small quantities, and thiazide diuretics have been detected in breast milk, so caution should be used in deciding whether to discontinue the drug or the breast-feeding.
