Drug InformationIt is used for the treatment and prevention of rickets, for low calcium levels and low levels of parathyroid hormone (hypoparathyroidism). Severe vitamin D deficiency leads to hearing loss, rickets in children and osteomalacia (soft bones) in adults.
Mechanism:
Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin that comes from natural sources such as fish liver oils. Vitamin D is considered a hormone. Vitamin D-like substances (metabolites) promote absorption of calcium and phosphorus and increase resorption of minerals in bone. Vitamin D a promotes the resorption of phosphate in the kidneys. Vitamin D can be produced by the action of sunlight on the skin.
