Drug InformationThis mineral is a dietary supplement given to treat or prevent a calcium deficiency (not enough) calcium in the blood. Calcium carbonate is also used as an antacid to relieve heartburn, acid indigestion, and stomach upset. It is available with or without a prescription. Calcium deficiency may lead to osteoporosis, bone fractures, or growth retardation. Sources of calcium are; milk, yogurt, cheese, ice cream, broccoli, navy beans or collard greens.
Mechanism:
Calcium is important for the structure of bones and teeth and plays an important role in muscle contraction and nerve function.

Side EffectsSide effects reported are usually mild and may include: stomach upset, constipation, dry mouth, increased urination, loss of appetite, vomiting, headache
Precautions:
Do NOT take more than the recommended dose of this supplement. Patients with renal insufficiency may experience reduction in calcium absorption. Also, high doses of caffeine may increase urinary calcium excretion.
Preganant:
Talk to your doctor about using this medicine during pregnancy or nursing to discuss any possible risks to you or your baby.

Dosage InformationFor proper use of this medicine, follow the directions on the package, unless otherwise instructed by your doctor. Chewable tablets should be chewed thoroughly before being swallowed; do not swallow them whole. Drink a full glass of water after taking either the regular or chewable tablets or capsules.
Missed Dosage:
If your doctor has instructed you to take this medicine regularly and you miss a dose, take your next dose, as soon as you remember. If you are close to your next dose, do not double up. Skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule.
Storage:
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
Overdose:
Seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
