Drug Information

For the relief of intestinal gas, diarrhea and GI distress associated with indigestion. Charcoal also is used to relieve itching associated with kidney dialysis treatment and to treat overdoses of other medicines. Charcoal may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this monograph.
Mechanism:
Charcoal is a detoxicant. It reduces the volume if intestinal gas and relieves related discomfort.

Precautions:
This product should not be used in children under the age of 3.
Preganant:
Talk to your doctor about using charcoal if you plan to become pregnant or want to breast-feed.

Dosage Information

Follow the package directions for using charcoal. Take each dose with a full glass (8 ounces) of water. Do not crush, break, or chew the capsules. Swallow them whole. Charcoal is usually taken after meals or at the first sign of discomfort.
Missed Dosage:
If your doctor has instructed you to take this medicine regularly and you miss a dose, take your next dose, as soon as you remember. If you are close to your next dose, do not double up. Skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule.
Storage:
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
Overdose:
Seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center.
