Drug InformationCholine is an essential nutrient, necessary to maintain cell membranes. It is also involved in the movement of fat in and out of cells and is necessary for normal brain functioning. It is used to treat liver disease, high cholesterol, depression, memory loss, Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia, as well as for body building, delaying fatigue in endurance athletes, and for asthma.
Mechanism:
Choline can be found in most cells, but seems to concentrate in nervous tissue. Dietary choline is required in addition to that normally synthesized by the body. Choline is necessary for the synthesis of cell membranes.

Side EffectsCholine has been reported to cause: stomach distress, diarrhea, vomiting, sweating, fishy body odor
Precautions:
Should not be taken in doses higher than 3.5 grams daily.
Preganant:
Doses up to 3.5 grams daily appear to be safe during pregnancy or lactation.
