Drug InformationThis medicine is used to treat gastric ulcers, duodenal ulcers, and for acid reflux, in which stomach acid is washed back up into the esophagus. The lower over-the-counter doses are used to relieve heartburn, acid indigestion, and sour stomach.
Mechanism:
Cimetidine is called an acid blocker, with the effect of preventing the release of acid into the stomach. The effect covers all phases of acid secretion, whether fasting, nocturnal, or stimulated by food, caffeine, or insulin.

Side EffectsThis medicine is generally well-tolerated.
Precautions:
Before taking cimetidine, tell your doctor if you have severe kidney or liver disease. A reduction in dose may be necessary.
Preganant:
There have not been well-controlled studies of cimetidine in pregnancy. Use only if clearly needed and the benefit outweighs any potential risk. Cimetidine has been shown to be excreted in breast milk, so caution should be used in deciding whether to discontinue the drug or the breast-feeding.

Dosage InformationCimetidine may be taken with or without food. For heartburn after meals, it is recommended to take with water, up to twice daily if needed. For treatment of ulcers or more severe conditions, dosing may be up to 4 times daily.
Missed Dosage:
Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.
Storage:
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
Overdose:
Seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center.
