Drug InformationClindamycin is used to treat serious respiratory tract infections and serious skin and soft tissue infections. It is also used in the surgical treatment of chronic bone and joint infections.
Mechanism:
This family of antibiotics kills bacteria by blocking the making of proteins needed for the bacteria to survive.

Side Effectsdiarrhea, colitis
Precautions:
The colitis caused by this medication may be severe and possibly fatal. Any signs of persistent diarrhea or severe abdominal cramps should be reported to your doctor right away.
Preganant:
Clindamycin is known to cross the placental barrier, and the safety for use in pregnancy has not been established. This drug is excreted in breast milk, and there is controversy over the safety while breast-feeding. Caution should be exercised, weighing benefits against possible risks.

Dosage InformationDosing is usually every six hours, with a full glass of water or with food, to avoid upset stomach.
Missed Dosage:
Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.
Storage:
Store at room temperature in a tightly closed container. Keep away from heat and light. The liquid should not be refrigerated. It may thicken and become difficult to pour and measure when chilled. The solution is good for 2 weeks at room temperature.

Seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
