Drug Information

Creatine is used to enhance athletic performance and to increase muscle mass in athletes and older adults. It may also be used to treat congestive heart failure, retinal degeneration, hyperlipidemia, and neuromuscular disease. It also has some use in slowing the progression of Lou Gehrig's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and for muscular dystrophies.
Mechanism:
Creatine is used in muscle tissue for the production of phosphocreatine, important in the formation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is the source of energy for muscle contraction and numerous other body functions. Creatine can increase phospocreatine levels in muscle, if accompanied by exercise.Numerous studies have shown that creatine supplementation for several days in moderately active or sedentary individuals may improve performance and delay fatigue during short duration, high intensity exercises, such as weight-lifting or sprint-running.
