Drug InformationCysteine is a nonessential amino acid and is a component of the antioxidant glutathione. It is believed to strengthen the protective lining of the stomach and intestines, perhaps helping prevent damage by aspirin and other gastric irritants. It is also thought to boost the immune system, but is rarely used as a supplement.
Mechanism:
It is thought to have a role in the proper function of the immune system. Deficiency may be a factor in immune suppression associated with HIV.

Precautions:
One small study reported that daily dosages in excess of 1.2 grams might cause oxidative damage.
