Drug InformationDHA is also known as Omega-3 Fatty Acid, considered an essential fatty acid. DHA is used to reduce levels of blood triglycerides in individuals at risk for heart disease. It is also essential for normal visual and nervous system development in infants. It is also used to prevent depression, reduce the symptoms of dementia, and for enhancing vision. In combination with other omega fatty acids, it has use in lupus, migraines, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, bipolar disorder, and ulcerative colitis.
Mechanism:
It is a long chain poly-unsaturated fatty acid involved in numerous metabolic pathways in the body, such as playing a key role in development of neural, retinal, and synaptic membranes. Pure DHA can reduce serum triglycerides in adults.

Dosage InformationDosing is usually with EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) in fish oil. A typical dose is considered to be 5 grams of fish oil, containing 169 to 563 mg of EPA and 72-312 mg of DHA per day. As a supplement in infant formula, 0.32% DHA is used.
