Drug InformationDHEA has been promoted for numerous uses, including slowing or reversing aging, promoting weight loss, boosting immunity, treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus, multiple sclerosis, erectile dysfunction, depression, heart disease, and diabetes. It is also used for increasing strength, energy, and muscle mass.
Mechanism:
DHEA is normally produced by the adrenals and by the liver. DHEA is metabolized to androstenedione, the precursor to both androgens and estrogens. It is believed that supplementation with DHEA can change the circulating androgen/estrogen ration in a gender-specific manner, although it is not well understood how to interpret this finding, and there is not general agreement on the therapeutic value of this product.
