Drug InformationIt is thought by some to be a precursor to acetylcholine, though not all studies agree. It has been used to treat tardive dyskinesia, a trembling disorder caused by long-term usage of several antipsychotic medications. It has also been tried in Alzheimer's disease with questionable results.
Mechanism:
It is thought to increase levels of the brain neurotransmitter acetylcholine.

Side EffectsDoses up to 1600 mg per day have been used with no reported side effects. Higher doses in Alzheimer's patients have reportedly caused drowsiness and confusion.
Precautions:
DMAE supplementation is not recommended at this time.
Preganant:
No studies have been done to verify the safety during pregnancy or while nursing.
