Drug InformationDMSO is considered anti-inflammatory and to relieve pain when applied to the skin. It has been used in treating minor injuries, tendinitis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, keloid scars, and scleroderma. It is also occasionally used as a vehicle to promote absorption of other therapeutic agents through the skin.
Mechanism:
DMSO is known to easily penetrate the skin and is widely distributed in body fluids and tissues. It is believed to have free-radical scavenging properties thought to be responsible for its anti-inflammatory and anti-ischemic properties.
