Drug Information

This medicine is used for patients who have congestive heart failure. This medicine can also be used in patients with fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm. Your doctor may also prescribe this medicine for other reasons as well.
Mechanism:
Digoxin increases the pumping action of the heart.

Side Effects

nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite
Precautions:
If you have ever experienced an allergic reaction to digitalis preparations, talk to your doctor before taking this medication.
Preganant:
If you suspect that you may be pregnant, talk to you doctor to discuss the risks versus the benefits to your pregnancy. For nursing mothers, this medication is excreted in breast milk. Before breast feeding, consult with your doctor.

Dosage Information

Digoxin should be taken regularly at the same time each day. Take this medicine on an empty stomach. Milk and dairy products may slow the absorption of the drug. The capsule should be swallowed whole. Follow directions on your prescription label.
Missed Dosage:
Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.
Storage:
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
Overdose:
Seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
