Drug InformationTopically, emu oil is used for a variety of inflammatory conditions, including sore muscles, aching joints, carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica, shin splints, and gout. It is also used for wound healing, sunburn, thermal burns, psoriasis, acne, eczema, stretch marks, shingles, hemorrhoids, and diabetic neuropathy. Orally, emu oil is used for lowering cholesterol levels, for weight loss, and as a cough syrup for colds and flu.
Mechanism:
Emu oil is a source of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Linoleic acid is believed to relieve muscle and joint pain. Oleic acid is a local anti-inflammatory. It is considered that emu oil penetrates the skin because it does not contain phospholipids.
