Enalapril

Drug Information

It is used mainly for treatment of high blood pressure, and may also be used in certain cases of heart failure and diabetic kidney disease.
Mechanism:
This medicine prevents a chemical reaction that creates blood vessel narrowing, causing the body to retain less sodium and fluids. Net result is a relaxation of arteries, lowering of blood pressure.

Side Effects

Precautions:
Sun sensitivity may be increased, so you should wear protective clothing or use sunscreens until your tolerance has been determined.
Preganant:
If you suspect that you may be pregnant, talk to your doctor. ACE inhibitors are not recommended for use during pregnancy, due to possible fetal damage. For nursing mothers, Enalapril is not known to be excreted in breast milk in significant quantities, but should be used with caution. Discuss with your doctor possible risks to your baby while taking this medicine.

Dosage Information

Enalapril is normally taken 1 or 2 times daily, and can be taken with food since food does not lower the absorption of the medicine significantly.
Missed Dosage:
Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.
Storage:
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
Overdose:
Seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
