Drug Information

Estradiol is one of the estrogenic hormones manufactured by the body, and the synthetic form may be prescribed for the treatment of menopause, for vaginal dryness, ovarian failure, for advanced prostate cancer, for treatment of certain breast cancers, and for prevention of osteoporosis (brittle bone disease).
Mechanism:
The estrogenic hormones are required by the body for developing and maintaining the female reproductive system and secondary sex characteristics. They promote growth and development of the vagina, uterus, fallopian tubes, and breasts. In treating osteoporosis, estrogen reduces bone resorption and slows down bone loss.

Estrogens should not be used during pregnancy, due to risk of birth defects. Also, estrogens have been shown to decrease the quantity and quality of breast milk and may be excreted in breast milk, so should be used only when clearly needed.

Dosage Information

For the treatment of menopause, dosing is once daily, and may be cycled for 3 weeks on and 1 week off. For treatment of prostate and breast cancers, dosing may be 3 times daily, and for prevention of osteoporosis, the dosing is usually cyclical, for 23 days on and 5 days off.
Missed Dosage:
Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.
Storage:
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
Overdose:
Seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
