Drug InformationTopically, eucalyptus oil is used for nasal stuffiness, respiratory inflammation, for rheumatic pain, and is inhaled for asthma, coughing, and for emphysema. Orally, it used for suppressing cough and as an expectorant.
Mechanism:
Topically, it works as a counterirritant. When taken orally, it functions as expectorant, is somewhat antibacterial and antispasmodic.

Side EffectsWhen taken by mouth, eucalyptus oil may cause: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.
Precautions:
Do not apply or ingest the undiluted oil. Avoid using on the face and nose of infants and young children.
Preganant:
This oil is considered safe during pregnancy only in doses commonly found in foods. There is insufficient information regarding safety of use while nursing.

Dosage InformationTypical oral dose is in the range of 300 to 600 mg daily. For topical use, concentrations of eucalyptus oil will usually run 5 to 20% .
