Drug InformationThis medicine is used for patients who have shingles (herpes zoster) or genital herpes.
Mechanism:
This medicine is converted to acyclovir and works by blocking an enzyne that is involved in the replication of the virus. This prevents growth of the virus in your system.

Side EffectsSome common side effects reported with this medicine include: fatigue, fever, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, rash, insomnia
Precautions:
This medicine should be used with caution by patients with a history of liver or kidney disease and with existing neurological problems.
Preganant:
If you suspect that you may be pregnant, it will be important to weight the risks and benefits of taking this medicine. Talk to you doctor. For nursing mothers, this medication should not be taken while breast-feeding. Stop taking the medicine or discontinue breast feeding until you are done with treatment.

Dosage InformationYou should start to take this medicine as soon as symptoms appear, and you will probably take it for at least seven days or as directed by your physician. This medicine may be taken with meals or on an empty stomach. Taking this medicine with food or a snack may reduce stomach upset.
Missed Dosage:
Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.
Storage:
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
Overdose:
Seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
