Drug InformationFamotidine is used to treat stomach and duodenal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and the lower, over-the-counter doses are used to relieve and prevent heartburn, acid indigestion, and sour stomach.
Mechanism:
This medicine blocks histamine which in turn decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach. This allows for healing of the stomach lining.

Side Effectsheadache
Precautions:
Patients with impaired kidney or liver function should talk to their doctors and exercise caution in using famotidine.
Preganant:
Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding should also use with caution. Famotidine is possibly excreted in breast milk, and there have not been well-controlled studies of this drug in women who breast-feed or are pregnant.

Dosage InformationFamotidine may be taken with or without food. If taking to prevent heartburn after meals, it is normally recommended one hour before the meal.
Missed Dosage:
Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.
Storage:
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
Overdose:
Seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
