Drug Information

This medicine is an androgen hormone inhibitor used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) which is an enlarged prostate. Your doctor may prescribe this medicine for other conditions as well.
Mechanism:
This medicine helps make the prostate smaller by blocking a specific enzyme that the body produces.

Side Effects

This medicine can cause side effects including: a change is sexual function, breast enlargement
Precautions:
It may take up to 6 to 12 months for this medicine to work. Do NOT stop taking this medicine without first talking to your doctor.
Preganant:
THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED for female patients. It is not know whether finasteride is excreted in breast milk.

Dosage Information

Follow the directions for taking this medicine provided by your doctor or pharmacist. This medicine should be taken at the same time everyday. The recommended dose for BPH is 5 mg once daily. This medicine can be taken with or without food. This medicine may be crushed if needed to swallow.
Missed Dosage:
Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.
Storage:
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
Overdose:
Seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
