Drug InformationIt is used to maintain a healthy heart, as a laxative for constipation, for arthritis, cancer, prostate enlargement, to lower cholesterol, and to prevent heart attacks.
Mechanism:
Linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid are necessary to maintain integrity of cell membranes. Alpha-linolenic acid raises serum levels of the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. The oil is thought to lower cholesterol levels and to provide cardiovascular benefit. It is also believed to be anti-inflammatory, and that it might have anti-tumor effects.

Side EffectsSide effects are rare and are usually related to overdosing. Doses up to 30 grams per day have been associated with loose stools and diarrhea.
Precautions:
It may interfere with prothrombin (clotting time) tests and with triglyceride tests.
Preganant:
Use during pregnancy is not recommended, since flaxseed may induce menstruation. It is not known whether medicinal doses are safe while breast-feeding, so this should be avoided.
