Drug InformationThis medicine is used to treat type II diabetes, either alone or in combination with other oral medications.
Mechanism:
Glyburide increases the production of insulin to maintain lower blood glucose levels. Type II diabetics still produce some insulin (not enough to maintain normal blood glucose levels), and glyburide may be used in combination with diet, exercise, weight management, and other oral medications for best control.
More Info:
For more information about this medication, talk to your healthcare provider.

Precautions:
If the patient then skips the meal, the result can be dangerously low blood sugar, so it is important to maintain a regular eating schedule if taking this medication.
Preganant:
Glyburide is not known to cause birth defects, but the sulfonylurea category is not recommended for use in pregnancy. Use only if clearly needed. It is not known whether glyburide is excreted in breast milk, so caution should be used in deciding whether to discontinue the drug or the breast-feeding.
