Drug InformationThis is an injectible insulin for type I diabetes, or for type II diabetes uncontrolled by diet, exercise, and weight reduction.
Mechanism:
Insulin lowers blood glucose levels by increasing the skeletal muscle and fat uptake of glucose, and by decreasing production of glucose by the liver. The human insulin are believed to have a more rapid onset and shorter duration than pork insulin in some patients. Human insulin are preferred in patients with insulin allergy, insulin resistance, pregnant diabetics, and any diabetic who uses insulin intermittently.

Side EffectsHypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and hypokalemia (low potassium) are possible with use of all insulin.
Precautions:
Patients with kidney or liver disease should be closely monitored.
Preganant:
Pregnancy may make diabetes management more difficult, and patients should be closely supervised. Insulin is the drug of choice for diabetes control in pregnancy. Lactating women may require adjustments in the dose of insulin and diet.

Dosage InformationThe number and amount of daily doses, as well as time of administration, may require constant medical supervision and monitoring. Blood glucose testing at several times of day may be required to arrive at a proper maintenance dose of insulin products.
Missed Dosage:
Again, regular blood glucose testing will determine the appropriate dosing in order to return to what is considered satisfactory levels for each patient.
Storage:
Insulin preparations being used are generally stable when stored at room temperature (not exposed to extreme heat or sunlight) for 1 month. Extra bottles should always be refrigerated, not frozen.
