Drug InformationIt is used to treat thyroid goiter (enlargement) due to lack of iodine. It is also used for hyperthyroidism, to inhibit the synthesis and release of thyroid hormone. It may also be used as an expectorant, for treating radiation emergencies associated with use of radioactive iodides, and for fibrocystic breast disease.
Mechanism:
The thyroid gland concentrates iodine for synthesis of thyroid hormone. The various iodine-rich thyroid hormones control many metabolic processes in the body. Iodine deficiency is most severely damaging in the developing brain, leading to retardation and/or cretinism.
