Medroxyprogesterone

Drug Information

This drug is used to treat secondary amenorrhea (lack of menstrual period) and abnormal uterine bleeding due to hormonal imbalance.
Mechanism:
Progestins transform the uterine lining to prepare for implantation of an embryo. If pregnancy occurs, the progestin acts to maintain the pregnancy. When used to treat amenorrhea, withdrawal bleeding usually occurs 3 to 7 days after therapy ends.

Side Effects

insomnia
Precautions:
Do NOT take this medicine if you are allergic to medroxyprogesterone.
Preganant:
Use of progestins during the first 4 months of pregnancy is not recommended. Medroxyprogesterone does not adversely affect milk production, but effects on the nursing effect have not been determined.

Dosage Information

For amenorrhea, the dose is 5 to 10 mg daily for 5 to 10 days, and can be started anytime. Withdrawal bleeding usually starts within 3 to 7 days after finishing therapy. For abnormal uterine bleeding, the usual dose is 5 to 10 mg daily for 5 to 10 days, beginning on the 16th or 21st day of the menstrual cycle.
Missed Dosage:
Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.
Storage:
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
Overdose:
Seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center.
