Minocycline

Drug Information

Minocycline is a member of the tetracycline family of antibiotics, used to treat a variety of upper respiratory and other bacterial infections (skin, urinary tract). Also included are syphilis, gonorrhea, some types of urethral or rectal infections, and treatment of severe acne.
Mechanism:
The tetracyclines work by inhibiting protein synthesis and are active against a broad spectrum of gram-negative and gram-positive organisms.

Side Effects

Side effects may occur with this medicine and include: lightheadedness, dizziness, vertigo, rash, sun sensitivity, discoloration of nails
Precautions:
The tetracycline family has been shown to cause photosensitivity, so use of sunscreens and protective clothing is advised.
Preganant:
The tetracyclines should not be used during pregnancy. Also, tetracyclines are excreted in breast milk, so it is advised to consider discontinuing the drug or the breast-feeding.

Dosage Information

The dosing varies with the infection being treated, but is usually taken orally twice daily. It can be taken with or without food.
Missed Dosage:
Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.
Storage:
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
Overdose:
Seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center.
