Drug InformationN-Acetyl Cysteine has been used by people for bronchitis, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). It has also been associated with its use in emphysema, HIV support, and gastritis. Healthy individuals do not need to supplement with NAC. Reports have shown that HIV-infected patients may be deficient in NAC and other related amino acids. NAC is used in hospitals for acetaminophen overdose. Your doctor may use NAC for other conditions as well.
Mechanism:
NAC helps the body make glutathione. Glutathione is an important antioxidant. NAC also protects the body from acetaminophen overdoses. In animals NAC protects the liver from toxic chemicals.

Side Effects19% of the people on one trial reported the following side effects when NAC was taken orally; headache, dry mouth, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain These reports have not been consistent by other researchers.
Precautions:
Supplements alone should NOT be substituted for a well-balanced diet.
Preganant:
If your are or planning to become pregnant, or are nursing a baby, talk to your doctor before taking NAC.
