Drug Information

This medicine is used to treat diarrhea caused by the parasite Cyptosporidium parvum and Giardia lambia in children ages 1 through 11.
Mechanism:
The antiprotozoal activity of nitazoxanide is believed to be due to interference with the pyruvate.

Side Effects

The side effects with this medicine is usually mild and goes away in a short time. The most common side effects are: abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, headache
Precautions:
Talk to health care provider if you have or had any of the following: diabetes, liver problems, kidney problems, bile or gallbladder problems
Preganant:
There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. It is not known whether nitazoxanide is excreted in human milk. Because many drugs are excreted in human milk, you should NOT breast-feed until you have talked to your health care provider.

Dosage Information

Take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. This medicine should be taken with food.
Missed Dosage:
Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.
Storage:
The container should be kept tightly closed, and the suspension should be shaken well before each administration. The suspension may be stored for 7 days, after which any unused portion must be discarded.
Overdose:
Seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
