Drug InformationPeople have used octacosanol for athersclerosis, to lower "bad" cholesterol, and to increase athletic performance. Deficiencies of octacosanol do not occur because it is not essential to the body. Your doctor or health care provider may recommend octasanol for other conditions as well.
Mechanism:
Policosanol, which contains octacosanol has been shown in several well-controlled studies to lower LDL cholesterol, while raising the "good" cholesterol (HDL). Although the exact mechanism is not known, a recent study has shown that 1,000 mcg (micrograms) per day given for 8 weeks did improve grip strength and visual reaction time, but had no effect on chest strength, endurance, or auditory reaction time.
