Drug Information

This medicine is used to treat infections, particularly those found in the sinuses, lower respiratory tract and urinary tract. It also may be used to treat chronic prostate infections, bladder infections, some bone and joint infections, and occasionally for infectious diarrhea.
Mechanism:
These drugs inhibit an enzyme necessary for the bacterial cells to multiply and grow in the body.

Antibiotics such as this may decrease the amount of good bacteria in your intestines needed for normal digestion. A supplement called Probiotic may be recommended to replace the "good" bacteria when you are taking this medication.

Side Effects

Preganant:
Talk to your doctor if you plan on becoming pregnant. This medicine should not be used if you are pregnant. This drug may affect bone development in the fetus. Although it is unknown whether this medicine is excreted in breast milk, you should avoid nursing while taking this medicine.

Dosage Information

This medicine is taken orally and may be taken with or without food. You can take the medicine with food if stomach upset occurs, but no dairy products. The tablets may be crushed if needed. It is recommended that you drink plenty of water while taking this medicine. Do not take this medicine with aluminum or magnesium-containing antacids, iron, zinc or calcium two hours before and after doses.
Missed Dosage:
Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.
Storage:
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
Overdose:
Seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
