Drug InformationOrnithine has been associated with increasing athletic performance, however, studies show mixed results. One study did demonstrate increase growth hormone, but at the expense of many GI side effects. A more recent study suggested that training athletes taking 1 gram per day of both amino acids, ornithine and arginine increased lean body mass after 5 weeks of intensive training. More studies are still needed.
Mechanism:
Ornithine is a nonessential amino acid which is a building block of proteins. The mechanism on how ornithine may increase athletic performance is unknown. Animal studies suggest that ornithine may increase levels of hormones such as insulin and growth hormone. More study is needed.
