Drug InformationThis medicine is used for the oral treatment of type 2 diabetes. Control of this type of diabetes is usually accomplished with a combination of diet, weight management, exercise, and medications. This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses. This medicine controls type 2 diabetes but does not cure it. Your doctor or pharmacist can give you more information on this.
Mechanism:
This drug works by decreasing insulin resistance. This helps the tissues to better utilize insulin produced by the pancreases.

Side EffectsA few of the most common side effects with this medicine include: low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), weight gain, fluid retention, headache
Precautions:
Notify your doctor if you have high blood pressure, kidney or liver disease.
Preganant:
If you plan on becoming pregnant, talk to your doctor. You and your doctor can discuss the benefits versus the risks of taking this medicine during pregnancy. Some experts recommend using insulin to control diabetes during pregnancy. This medicine is excreted in the breast milk and should not be used during pregnancy.

Dosage InformationThis medicine is usually taken once or twice daily with or without meals. It should be taken about the same time everyday. Skipping meals while taking this medicine is not advised. This can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). The tablet may be crushed to make it easer to take.
Missed Dosage:
Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.
Storage:
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.

Seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
