Drug InformationPotassium is used to treat or prevent low amounts of potassium in the blood (hypokalemia).
Mechanism:
Potassium is responsible for the conduction of nerve in the heart, brain and skeletal muscle. It also plays a major role in maintaining normal kidney function, acid-base balance and carbohydrate metabolism

Side EffectsSide effects may go away with treatment.
Precautions:
Before taking this medicine tell your doctor if you are taking a potassium-sparing diuretic or ACE inhibitors.
Preganant:
It is now known whether potassium salts can cause harm to the fetus. Talk to your doctor if you plan on becoming pregnant or plan on breast feeding.

Dosage InformationFollow the instructions given to you by your doctor. Potassium should be taken with food or right after a meal to prevent stomach upset. Take the medication with a full glass of water. Do not chew or crush tablets unless your are told to do so by your doctor, nurse or pharmacist. With some sustained release forms of potassium you may find a wax matrix in your stool. Donât be alarmed, this is only the outer shell and does not mean that the drug hasnât absorbed. Now that your doctor has given you a potassium supplement, avoid using salt substitutes. These salt substitutes contain potassium and you could get too much.
Missed Dosage:
Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.
Storage:
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
Overdose:
Seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
