Drug InformationThis medicine is used to treat asthma and bronchospasms, either alone or in conjunction with other medications. It may be used for prevention of exercised-induced asthma and for long-term treatment of emphysema or bronchitis.
Mechanism:
Salmeterol relieves bronchospasms by relaxing the smooth muscles of the bronchioles (the tubes carrying air into the lungs).

Side Effectsincreased heart rate
Precautions:
Patients with diabetes, hyperthyroidism, prostate enlargement, or seizure disorders are at higher risk.
Preganant:
This drug should be used with caution during pregnancy, and only when the benefit clearly outweighs the potential risk. It is unknown whether salmeterol is excreted in breast milk, so caution should be used in deciding whether to discontinue the drug or the breast-feeding.

Dosage InformationSalmeterol is available as an orally inhaled aerosol or a powder for oral inhalation. These are generally used for long-term twice daily maintenance treatment and not recommended for use by patients who can be controlled with shorter-acting inhaled bronchodilators. Always have a short-acting bronchodilator for acute attacks. Salmeterol may be used with or without steroid therapy, according to needs of the patient.
Missed Dosage:
Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.
Storage:
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
Overdose:
Seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
