Drug InformationSaw palmetto has historically been used to relieve the urination problems associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), including frequent urination, delayed onset of urination, weak urinary stream, and nocturia (nighttime urination). Additional uses have included chronic or subacute cystitis, sex hormone disorders, testicular atrophy, it is used as a mild diuretic, and an anti-inflammatory.
Mechanism:
Saw Palmetto is believed to contain urinary antiseptic, diuretic, endocrinological, and anabolic properties. Although it has been generally accepted that saw palmetto relieves only the symptoms of BPH without reducing the enlargement, recent research suggests that it may actually have tissue-shrinking activity. Additional studies will be required to validate these claims.
