Drug InformationThis medicine is a water pill (diuretic) used for fluid retention in patients with heart failure, liver cirrhosis, nephrotic (kidney) syndrome, and for high blood pressure. This medicine may be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Mechanism:
This medication is a member of what is called the potassium-sparing diuretics family. It works by ridding the body of extra-cellular fluid, without depletion of potassium, an electrolyte essential for normal heart functioning.

Side Effectsnausea, vomiting
Precautions:
Avoid potassium supplements or salt substitutes.
Preganant:
This drug has not been well studied during pregnancy, but it is believed to cross the placenta and therefore should NOT be used during pregnancy. Break-down products from this drug appear in breast milk, so caution should be used in deciding whether to discontinue the drug or the breast-feeding.

Dosage InformationFollow the directions for use that your doctor has given you. This medicine is taken by mouth and can be taken with food or on an empty stomach. Dosing is usually once daily, but may be given twice daily in some patients. Avoid foods high in potassium or use of salt substitutes.
Missed Dosage:
Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.
Storage:
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
Overdose:
Seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
