Drug InformationThiamine is a water soluble vitamin used to treat or prevent a deficiency (not enough in the body). It is most commonly seen in severely malnourished people caused by long-term dieting, alcoholism, and diets consisting of highly processed foods. Certain drugs can also cause you to not have enough of this vitamin. See drug interactions. Symptoms of deficiency include, weakness, nausea, tingling in the hands or feet, rapid heartbeat, or loss of appetite.
Mechanism:
Thiamine works as a coenzyme and is involved in many chemical reactions in the body. Thiamine is required by all cells in the body to make ATP, a form of energy. It is also necessary for the maintenance of nerve tissues, muscular function (especially the heart), plays a role in memory and is involved in fatty acid synthesis. The richest sources of thiamine are brewer's yeast and organ meats. Whole grains are an important dietary source of vitamin B in the human diet.
