Top of Page

Drug Information

This medicine is used to treat high blood pressure, either alone or in conjunction with other medications.
Mechanism:
The valsartan reduces blood pressure by blocking the effects of Angiotensin, a chemical that causes constriction of blood vessels and stimulation of heart muscle. The HCT (hydrochlorothiazide) is a diuretic (water pill), to reduce fluid retention. The net result is a relaxation of arteries, lowering of blood pressure, and increase in heart output, with little change in heart rate.
More Info:
For more information about this medicine, talk to your healthcare provider.

Side Effects

cough
Precautions:
It may be necessary to reduce the dose in patients with impaired kidney function or liver disease. Talk to your doctor if you have a history of kidney disease.
Preganant:
There have not been well-controlled studies of Diovan HCT in pregnancy. Use only if clearly needed and the benefit outweighs any potential risk. It is unknown whether valsartan is excreted in breast milk but thiazide diuretics have been detected in breast milk, so caution should be used in deciding whether to discontinue the drug or the breast-feeding.
